it’s so weird(in a good way) but fantastic to have all those people in seoul at the same time. R-16 had invited all those ‘bookshelf’ people. (in pic, brent, B+, joy, jamel)

later that day, B+ wanted to hit some record spots to get some korean records, so we went down to several shops. had a great time talking about brazil, music and brazilian music. also visited our studio and gave us some new releases from mochilla. that day was the official release date of jackson conti. that new madlib + mamao project is just beautiful.

gotta tell dahahm that he really appreciated his pics. man… you are in a totally wrong place now!

just had a Q&A session with evil monito. thanks EM! everytime i mess it up with my broken english, sylvia (EM editor in chief) takes my writings to a whole ‘new level’ rather than just correcting it. be my redpen teacher!

philly steak

이 길은 남쪽의 번화가를 따라서 전통적으로 유명한 레코드 샵들이 많은 곳입니다.

안타깝게도 많은 샵들이 사라지고, philly record exchange같은 샵들도 굉장히 디프레스 된 분위기였습니다…

그래서 필리스테이크나 먹자! 하고 무작정 들어갔습니다.

organized konfusion, gravediggaz, fat larry’s band, mr.t가 인정하는 그 맛!

반대쪽에 있는 이태리타운에 있는 곳이 더 유명하다고 하더군요. 둘다 맛있었습니다만.

필리가 미국의 첫 수도였다고 하는데, 맞나요?

조용하고 한적한- 소울풀하면서도 거친 매력이 있는 한번쯤 살아보고 싶은 곳이었습니다.

b-more 가는길… 왠지 불길한 날씨입니다.

역시나 몇몇 스팟들은 이미 없어졌고, 유일하게 찾은 곳이 이 레코드 스토어.

다운타운에서 조금 떨어진 곳의 다른 몇몇 허름한 cd샵들은 실제로 레코드를 팔기 위한 곳이 아니라 다른 뭔가를 거래하는 곳이라고 합니다. 따라서 그런곳들은 들어가지 마시길 바랍니다.

그리고 역시나 b-more의 본고장. 갖가지 b-more 올드스쿨 트랙들을 모아서 파는 섹션들도 있습니다. b-more에 대한 자부심이 강해서 다른 지역의 디제이들이 자기들의 싸운드를 흉내내는것을 좀 언짢아 했습니다. 어둡고 거칠고 음침한 이 동네의 맛이 있어야 뭔가 진짜 발티모어 브레익느낌이구나… 라고 교육받았습니다.

다운타운의 그래도 좀 붐비는 클럽가에서도 후드느낌이 아닌 사람은 저 뿐이어서 카메라 찍고 뭐 할 여유도 없었습니다.  소지품 검사도 까다롭고… 밤이되니 긴장타고 사람들은 거리를 미친듯이 뛰어다닙니다…

다운타운을 제외한 지역에는 대부분 이렇게 모든 크로싱마다 경찰 cctv가 달려있고 파란 사이렌 램프가 번쩍번쩍 거립니다. 블럭위로 경찰헬기가 계속 날아다니고… wire의 한장면같은 분위기가 끊이질 않습니다만, 해떨어지면 이방인들은 일찍 집에 가라며 충고해주는 정-도 있습니다.

최근 발티모어의 범죄율이 드디어 1위를 차지했다고 하지만, 경찰의 대응도 만만치 않은듯 합니다. 오히려 필리 유펜 뒷쪽이 더 긴장탑니다. 뭐 완전 두집걸러 폐허인 섹션들, 주차해둔 차가 뒤집어있질 않나.. 일라델프 하프라이프 느낌으로 잠깐 물한통 사고 오는 길에도 타이트하게 움직였습니다. 레코드 샵들이나 딜러들이 위험한 지역에 있는 경우에는 오히려 손때가 안타서 좋은 음반들도 굉장히 싸게 구합니다. eddie russ의 see the light을 1$에도 구할 수 있는 그곳! 하지만 사면서 시한폭탄 터지듯 항상 시간을 체크해서 어두워지기전에 조금이라도 일찍 빠져나와야하는 그곳! 그런게 여행의 재미가 아닌가 싶네요

왠지 어둠의 소굴을 빠져나오는 듯하게 .. 날씨가 묘했습니다.. 아 날씨탓인가.. 그래도 돌아서니 나름 평화로운 곳.

제가 머물던 펜실베니아의 jim thorpe에는 미국에서 가장 오래된 기차역이 있다고 합니다.

하지만 이것은 역 반대편의 시계탑..

뉴저지로 향했습니다. 먼저 들른 곳은 프린스턴 레코드 익스체인지였지만, 별 건 없었고.. you know, ebay makes the world go round… 오늘의 스팟은 아직 그 전자상거래의 손길이 미치지 않은 timeless tracks입니다.

가게가 항상 오픈되있는 것은 아니고 약속을 잡고 갔습니다. 겉에서 보기엔 작지만 ㄱ자 구조로 꽤 큽니다.

로컬 라디오 스테이션의 디제이 겸 모기지 상담사로 활동하는 주인장은 스윗소울 매니아입니다. 젠틀하시고 열정적이신 분.

그렇게 수시간이 지나고 하루를 마치는 한발의 총성이 뉴저지 하늘을 가른 뒤 살금살금 빠져나와 숨죽여 차를 몰았습니다.
